You Are a Message: An Intuitive Movement Challenge

IMG_6904.JPG

May is National Mental Health Month and one of my favorite tools for processing my emotions, working through hardships, and deepening my healing is through intuitive movement. I find that movement therapy is a powerful tool to help us connect to our bodies, understand our needs, and deepen our relationship to ourselves. I use intuitive movement to express aspects of my trauma, healing, or life experiences that I don't have words for. It's also a tool for me to reclaim my body as my own, especially when certain experiences stifle the way I connect to my body. I'm excited to share this month's Instagram challenge in hope of giving you a new resource to explore or deepen the practice of moving your body.

You Are a Message is a free Instagram challenge created and hosted by intuitive movement practitioners and somatic educators, Jenny Bork and I. What is intuitive movement? It's a personal practice rooted in the foundation of connecting to your body's innate wisdom through internal cues, sensations, and being present in using your body as a way to express these cues without forcing, resisting, or performing movement. It is an act of faciliting the body's ability to naturally express itself and flowing along with whatever that may look like, whether it's rolling around on the floor, wiggling your fingers, or spinning around in circles.

You Are a Message asks the participant to connect to the dynamic range of sensation in their body, shift their habitual ways of moving, and explore movement therapy as a means to process and express what's happening within themselves in order to heal, grow, and deepen their relationship to their body. It's a week long challenge that starts Monday, May 7th and ends Sunday, May 13th. Participants can sign up to the challenge by obtaining a free ticket and providing a valid email address. You do not need any movement or dance experience to participate! You just need a body and the willingness to explore movement in the many ways it wants to be expressed within you, whether seated or standing, twirling or jumping—this is an opportunity to explore your body through intuitive expression.

You will be given a daily intuitive movement challenge sent to you via email, along with resources including introspective prompts, playlists, articles, book recommendations, and additional somatic support for that day.

The hashtag assigned to this challenge is #iamamessage

The sign up deadline is by midnight, May 6th. The challenge begins May 7th!

Participate in this challenge if you want to:

  • Expand your embodiment toolkit through intuitive movement practices, somatic healing, and community.

  • Gain a deeper understanding of how you respond to your body's internal cues, sensations, and needs.

  • Learn to process experiences and emotions through the body using the cathartic tool of movement therapy.

  • Reclaim your ability to express sensations in your body in the present moment.

  • Understand the narratives that have shaped the way you relate to your body.

  • Connect with a community of amazing humans who are also exploring somatic expression.

  • Allow your body to do what it needs to release, aka, move like you've been possessed by Elvis.

  • Reclaim movement as your own and not how society expects you to use your body.

  • Have fun!

Meet Your Hosts

Victoria Emanuela (it me!) is a creative writer, movement meditation teacher, counselor (LPC), and co-founder of the small press On Being in Your Body. She's dedicated to the practice of creating windows where there are walls by helping humans reclaim their bodies and lives through the methods above. Victoria has used writing, mindful movement, and creative exploration as a tool to understand her body for almost a decade. While overcoming complex PTSD and healing a chronic illness, she found that the intersection of embodiment and the creative arts was not only a way to heal, but a way to live. Victoria is passionate about bringing people together to explore what it means to be in their body through the practice of somatic writing, embodied flow, and being unapologetically human.

Jenny Bork (total kween!) is a licensed massage therapist in Grand Rapids, MI. She discovered her passion for her work not only through her work with clients, but also in her own self-exploration and dedication to growth. Her work is based off of the belief that chronic pain, tension, and general dis-ease in the mind and body are merely red flags that show up as a result of a disconnection from your true self. She uses her intuition, John F. Barnes Myofascial Release, holistic counseling, movement and posture education, energy work, bodywork, and mindfulness to meet you where you're at, uncover unconscious belief systems and embodied patterning, and discover the root cause of your condition. With new awareness, you will reconnect to your own deepest personal truth, wisdom, and innate freedom.
